As EDGE's travel editor, I would never recommend an LGBT-unfriendly destination to readers or friends. You wouldn't find me on this cruise.

Perhaps Mr. Long should get his head out of...the clouds and realize that mutilation and death are good reasons to avoid ANY place. Dear Scott: I have your back any time you are the first under attack.

Sorry about the rating Style Guy: I hit the wrong star. I give you a 5 Star rating.

NO!!! Why should we support a culture that screams for Hu,am Rights yet denies them to others. No matter if it is Gay or women or whatever. I include ALL cruise ships. I can never understand why even Disney cruise line goes there. What does that tell our young children?

Given all the hatred of the place pumped out here daily by EDGE writers and editors, I think that once gay cruise ships leave U.S. ports they shouldn't return! If we're going to punish Caribbean nations that have problems with LGBT political correctness, why not punish the evil United States as well! Certainly, if one wants to avoid looking completely hypocritical, one should NEVER make California a port o' call.

There are a few gay friendly islands in the region, I have had great luck in the island of Saba. Others have told me they had no problems with the locals there either. The community should be encouraging them with the dollars rather than the homophobic islands.

I also give this article five stars, However, I am confused by the five stars given by "the style guy". He says he wouldn't go on this cruise, yet the article clearly defines homophobia as a problem in every Caribbean nation. The article also points out that other LGBT tour operators such as Atlantis have visited the Bahamas on numerous occasions. Defining the LGBT attitude of Caribbean nations as "unfortunate and antiquated" does not really support the "Style Guy's" view. I guess his travel suggestions would stick to West Hollywood, Provincetown and Ft Lauderdale (all of which have cases of murder defined under the hate crimes staute). Those "safe" gay ghettos that have "never" have hate crimes or suffer from discrimination.... Kind of boring really...homogenization. Truly a type of self inflicted segregation that is against what Pride truly stands for. Is he suggesting that we can only celebrate Pride in "safe" places? Don't we march down the middle of the streets in all major cities as an act of standing up for ourselves against all forms of discrimination? Should we only play to the ear of those that agree with us?

Please, the whole thing is a mess to begin with---they are departing from Florida, which is extremely intolerable territory on our own soil, then arriving at a location that clearly would not welcome them. That GLBT vacation in Florida at all seems like they are paying the bigots to keep supporting laws against them. I'd rather go somewhere cold where I'm treated equally than somewhere warm where I have to pretend what I'm doing makes sense!

First, it is important to consider how many of these alleged 'hate crimes' are actually assaults on rich tourists, sexual orientation notwithstanding. Even in the US, Members of the GLBT community are too prone to mistake a garden-variety mugging for a hate crime. The article correctly points out that islands that were former British Colonies are the most homophobic, largely due to the residual influence of firebrand Wesleyan preachers like Charlotte Bronte's odious St. John Rivers in 'Jane Eyre'. Their Christianity has a nasty Fundamentalist streak, not unlike found in most African-American churches. If not 100% accepting, I understand there is a much more of a 'live and let live' attitude in the Latino and French islands, and I have been told that the openness of Amsterdam extends to Aruba. I agree that countries with sodomy laws should be boycotted: hit 'em where it hurts!

Thanks for raising an important issue. As a practical matter, though, what gay-friendly ports would you endorse in the Caribbean? Logistically, Bahamas is the only possibility for short 3-4 day cruises. Not every gay person can afford 5-7 day cruises, especially when all-gay ships typically charge 2-3 times the prices of mixed-crowd ships. An article about price-gouging of gay passengers would make interesting reading.

Why would I vacation anywhere I am hated, insulted, ridiculed and considered a 'pervert'? I'll spend my bucks at Disney World where they love us!!!
